Microsoft tightens security within Intune
Microsoft has initiated stricter security measures within Intune, impacting organizations and users who haven't updated their mobile work apps. Since January 19, these users have been unable to access business emails. This change, as reported by Neowin, is a long-awaited warning from Microsoft, now taking effect with visible consequences for end users.
The focus is on Intune Mobile Application Management. Microsoft will only allow apps built with recent SDK versions or correctly packaged with the latest Intune wrapper. Non-compliant apps, including internal, custom, and commonly used Microsoft apps like Outlook, Teams, and OneDrive, will be automatically blocked on both Android and iOS, if not updated via the App Store or Play Store.
For Android, the Intune Company Portal is crucial. An outdated portal can cause other managed work apps to refuse to start, potentially paralyzing the entire mobile work environment due to a single overdue update. On iOS, the emphasis is on the SDK or wrapper, affecting organizations with custom business apps.
Microsoft provided a generous transition period, notifying organizations via the Microsoft 365 Message Center since September 2025. The intended effective date was December 15, 2025, with enforcement following shortly after. This explains the recent blocking of users, as per Microsoft's plan to give administrators and development teams ample time to adapt their apps and policies.
Android apps generally follow updates automatically once the Company Portal and at least one Microsoft app are updated. iOS apps, however, require developers to actively switch to new SDK or wrapper versions, posing a risk of blockages for internally maintained apps.
Microsoft offers administrators tools to prevent issues, such as Conditional Launch policies, which enforce minimum SDK versions, app versions, or Company Portal versions. This proactive approach ensures users are warned or blocked before unexpectedly losing access to their work apps.
This development highlights the increasing importance of strict app and update management in mobile working. Organizations that fail to manage this adequately risk productivity disruptions due to outdated software, rather than technical malfunctions.
