Air New Zealand's Carry-On Rules:
Air New Zealand allows one carry-on bag with a maximum weight of 7kg, plus a small personal item like a handbag or laptop case. Rachel Lilley, the airline’s head of regional airports, explains that this policy is designed to align with the space and weight limitations of overhead lockers across their fleet. It's also aimed at reducing the risk of injury to both customers and crew, ultimately contributing to smoother boarding and on-time departures.
Air New Zealand emphasizes that oversized or overweight bags can create real problems during boarding. They can strain limited locker space, increase the risk of injury, and slow down the process when bags need to be rechecked or rearranged. Lilley highlights that the airline consistently enforces its policy to ensure a fair experience for all passengers. Jetstar's Carry-On Rules:
Jetstar currently allows passengers to bring two carry-on items with a combined weight of up to 7kg. Passengers also have the option to purchase an additional carry-on allowance of 7kg, potentially giving them a total of 14kg if needed. Jetstar states that its rules are in place to maintain safe and punctual flights.
A spokesperson for the budget airline said cabin baggage limits are applied across its network, including on New Zealand routes, to support safe, on-time operations.
But here's where it gets controversial... Jetstar acknowledges that the current system, particularly weight limits and gate weighing, can be a source of stress for its customers. They are currently reviewing their cabin baggage policy, with the goal of reducing frustration at the gate and improving the boarding experience. Any changes will be made in consultation with staff and will aim to enhance the experience for both travelers and frontline teams while safeguarding safety and punctuality. However, no changes have been finalized yet.
